A two-way radio is basically a radio that can both receive and transmit radio waves, unlike an ordinary radio which only receives information. It is a wireless transceiver, transmitter and receiver in a single unit, used mainly for bidirectional human-to-human voice communication via other wireless users with similar systems. The use of these radios is on a need-to-know basis only, like when using cell phones or MP3 players. Also known as walkie-talkies, these devices are used primarily for communication purposes inside buildings and other enclosed areas. These radios are also used extensively in the construction business, for security reasons and for carrying out tasks such as surveying large area without the use of land lines or cell phones.
The two-way radios are generally designed with a push-pull power supply, so that they can operate on batteries or disposable electrical units. They usually consist of a primary transmitter, which normally operate as the main receiver, and a pair of dual antennas, with each pair covering a given area to receive radio waves. The advantage of using two antennas is that the signal strength is spread over a larger area. A disadvantage is that they tend to work only if there is another antenna available nearby. Most two-ways work on the same principle of receiving radio waves from the primary antenna, sending the same waves back to the secondary antenna, thereby making the entire process a ‘two way’ communications system.
In recent times, the cost of using a two-way radio has come down substantially, and many manufacturers have started creating different varieties of these devices, most having additional features. A popular variant is the walkie talkie, a hand-held communication device which allows people to speak with each other without taking out their mobile phones.
