Walkie talkies are hand-held, lightweight portable, hands-free radios that utilize radio waves for communication. Each battery powered handset has a radio transmitter (which in turns doubles as a receiver) an antenna for transmitting and receiving radio signals, a speaker which often also acts as a microphone, and another push-to-talk button which, surprisingly, you push in order to speak.
