A Simple Introduction to Walkie Talkies

A walkie talkie, also known as a hand-held transceiver, is basically a two-ways, hand-held radio communications device that is capable of sending and receiving data. The evolution of this communication device was facilitated by the development of the computer microprocessor. It has now become an important part of many different fields of science and technology due to the ease of its use and cost effectiveness. Many different types of walkie talkie are available in the market today. The following is a brief description of each type and some examples of applications for these devices.

The first and most common walkie talkie type is the squawker or walkie talkie. This is a basic model with a rectangular box containing all the internal components of the device. Squawkers are used in various applications such as military and civilian radio channels, cabling operations, ATV racing and camping, mobile tracking and even medical applications. A two-ways transceiver like the squawker is suitable for short or long range operation, depending on the terrain.

Another class of walkie talkies is the dipole antenna. These are typically constructed from a single plastic cone, which is widely used in both domestic and commercial applications. A dipole antenna is characterized by its’ simple design, low cost operation and flexibility. In the past, the dipole antenna was constructed using a couple of copper wires in a circular pattern which generated radio waves by resonance. Nowadays, the two most popular dipole models are the single-sided, or braid, antenna and the multimode, or phased, antenna.

The third most common and widely used walkie talkie model is the base station model. Base stations work on their own frequency band, and they receive and transmit signals from nearby cell phones and other wireless devices using a mast similar to those used in telecommunication companies. With the advent of more sophisticated models, base stations are no longer limited to two or three major channels; several high power channels can operate independently. Moreover, the older style was susceptible to interference and had to be constantly repaired or replaced because of the frequency band distortion it would experience.

The latest generation of walkie talkie microphones are much more efficient than their predecessors. The new models can detect a human voice and transmit the information to the receiving device at a much greater distance. However, it’s important to note that while these highly sensitive machines are extremely accurate, they are not as robust as other highly sensitive microphones found in regular consumer electronics. Moreover, they are not as versatile as their more advanced and sophisticated cousins. While a base station with a single frequency band can handle simple communications within a household, there are many other uses where multi-frequency channels would be more appropriate.

Modern walkie talkie systems generally have a small, lightweight antenna that fits inside a housing that protects it from outside interference. In order to use the system effectively, however, the user must also understand how to operate the controls and accessories. These include an internal rechargeable battery and a battery connector. Once a sufficient amount of charge has accumulated, the user can then activate the device and begin communicating using the radio waves produced by the waves emitted by the transmitter.
