A walkie talkie, more officially called a hand-held portable transceiver, is a two-way low-frequency radio communication system that is used in military and aviation applications. It is comparable in characteristics to today’s standard walkie talkie (GSM) phone or PDA. The invention of this radio system by German radio engineers was diverse to earlier Radio Frequency Identification Systems (RFS) employed in military applications. During the Second World War, the development of this low-frequency system was differentially attributed to a group of German radio engineers known as the “Blitzkrieg”. The term “Blitzkrieg” literally means “atical war” and this is the basic background on how the Walkie Talkie came to be.
Basically, a walkie talkie uses radio waves as means of communication. These radio waves are in the lower frequency band (low-frequency), which is below those utilized by regular telephones and mobile phones. This is because they can only function at a single frequency. These walkie talkies are made up of a base station and a collection of hand-held hand-sets that are equipped with an antenna and receiver to send and receive signals from any suitable stations within their range.
Generally, there are three types of walkie talkie: the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), the pre-canned talkie and the post shared systems. The GPRS walkie talkie uses an analog signal sent by a base station to a pre-determined area. The pre-canned talkie utilizes a digital signal sent from a hand-held transceiver to another area and vice versa. Post shared systems are generally given the name because the data is stored in a central location after being received by various handsets.
The Walkie Talkie Systems has some advantages over the earlier modes of communication like using phone lines and so on. Firstly, the new walkie-talkie technology makes use of very short radio waves. This enables the transmission and reception within a much smaller space than the older systems. As a result, the distance covered by these radio waves is much higher.
Another very important feature of walkie talkie systems is their convenience. They are extremely user friendly because they can be easily installed and handled. They need no expert hands or any technical skills to operate because they come with a transmitter/receiver pair that only needs to be inserted into the receiver slot and then operated with a push-to-talk button. As a result, the operation of this device is very simple.
There are various types of walkie talkie systems that are available in the market. The systems are separated into three basic categories namely, single-line, multiple line and multipoint walkie talkie devices. In addition, there are also systems that support voice transmission along with data transmission. Such walkie talkie devices are widely used for various applications such as the transfer of military signals, personal communications and Internet protocols.
