Difference Between Walkie Talkie and Two Way Radio
In the past, two way radios were always understood to mean walkie talkie devices. Today however, this is a term that has more meaning in the technological world. Although there is some overlap between the two, there are still slight differences: As per these definitions, all walkie talkie radios are two way radios. However, this does not mean that all two way radios are walkie talkie devices.
For instance, a handheld desk or vehicle mounted mobile radio may actually be a walkie talkie due to the fact that it is not handheld. However, it can be utilized as one when receiving radio waves from another source. This is also true for receiving radio waves from a nearby source with a directional coupler. This is because the directional coupler is used for receiving radio waves and not transmitting them. With that said, if you receive radio waves from an antenna which is not a two way device, then you would not have a walkie talkie and it would simply become a hand held radio.
Receivers, on the other hand, are the ones used for transmitting and this is done by using a base station and a antenna. Base stations are generally installed close to a source of transmission and they receive the transmitted radio wave and then they send it out in the form of a sound or an audio signal. The majority of walkie talkie devices are used for communication and this is where there are noticeable differences between two way radios and walkie talkie devices.
