General Differences Between Walkie Talkies, Radios and Other Two-Way Radio Systems

Based on these definitions, all walkie talkie radios are two way radios operated by a transmitter and receiver. However, not all two way radios are walkie talkie radios. So, the major difference between these two is really how they’re marketed.

The X-Talker, also known as the GPRS radio, is a two way walkie talkie that has a unique styling, is very sleek and is a great size and shape for a small hand held device. This two way radio looks much like an old style suitcase with three circular plastic pieces holding together by two rubberized clips and has a power input similar to a laptop computer or a cell phone power adapter with a USB outlet. There is an on-screen keypad, a volume control, and a speaker. This particular model also has a rechargeable batteries option for those times you don’t need to use your hands to operate the radio.

Now, the Walkie Talkie, sometimes referred to as the GMRS radio, is a two-way radio that is a little larger than an X-Talker but not nearly as large as the GPRS radio. It has a much wider range than the X-Talker (which is only good for three people at most) and it also has an earpiece that works just like a walkie talkie with a directional microphone. This particular model has a rechargeable battery option and comes in a bright red color to blend in with any outfit. This particular model is slightly more expensive than the average walkie talkie, so it is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a two way radio with the appearance of a suitcase and the capability of connecting to your cell phone, laptop computer, or other portable devices.
