A two-way radio or two-way walkie-talkie is a two-way radio that will both receive and transmit radio waves, unlike a conventional broadcast receiver that only receives radio waves. If you only want to listen to a station for a short time, you may only need a one-watt receiver, while if you want to transmit, you may need a higher wattage transmitter in order to receive a signal.

In order to receive a signal, your radio must be within range of the transmitter. This is because the signal travels from the transmitter all the way down to your receiver through the air and back up to the antenna height. The distance the radio travels depends on several factors, such as the object that is being surveyed, the frequency the radio wishes to talk on, the obstructions in the way, and many other factors. For instance, if you are looking to survey something in a large building and there are trees or other objects that may block the signal from reaching the antenna, you will not be able to use your two-way radio in those areas. You will need a license to talk on the frequency if you wish to talk in those places, such as large buildings.

In order to talk with other radio users who are within range of your transmitter, you need to find another device that has the channel that your transmitter is able to handle. Your channels can be divided up into four separate channels, which are commonly referred to as frequency channels. There are typically seven channel numbers, but this number can vary depending upon the radio that you have. Your channels can be controlled by holding down the channel number when you talk, which will tell the device to communicate using that frequency.
