Understanding A 2-Way Radio

A two-way radio, sometimes called a walkie-talkie is a hand-held radio that can both receive and transmit radio waves, unlike a conventional broadcast receiver that only receives radio waves. It is also a transceiver, transmitter and receiver in a single unit, employed mainly for walkie-talkie communication with other wireless users with similar radios, for bidirectional communication. The term “two-way” radio refers to the ability to communicate with people who are in radio contact with you. This type of radio functions by picking up an incoming signal, amplifying it and passing it on to a receiving antenna. The transmitted radio waves are then amplified and become strong enough to be picked up by the receiving antenna. In the process, the user’s radio signal is also amplified and becomes strong enough to reach the other users.

These radios have various uses and are ideal for military applications, boating and recreation vehicles, police vehicles, construction sites and even for personal (such as car and pet) ownership. Because they use low power emissions, they are particularly suitable for home owners who want to communicate while traveling. Some two-way radios even operate on solar or alternative energy sources. Some two-ways operate using batteries while others rely on rechargeable batteries.

Today, there are numerous two-way radios on the market from which to choose, such as Walkie Talkies, which is hand held devices that have a range of about thirty feet; to mobile phones, which can communicate to a specified area and can work independently as well. Two-way radios have enabled improved communication in such areas as military operations, boating and recreation facilities, emergency and disaster situations and personal hobbies such as camping and hunting. Many new models of two-way radios have the capability of sending and receiving data at a rate of up to 110 miles per second, much faster than the older analog transmitters. As a result of this ability, many hobbyists find two-way radio’s an indispensable tool for the modern farmer, while those who work in industries that require fast, accurate communications use the radios for business purposes only.
