Walkie Talkie

A walkie talkie is a communication device that allows you to communicate with others from a distance. They are most commonly used for military purposes but also provide a great way of communicating when you are in an area where coverage is poor or you don’t have a cell phone signal.

They work by converting your voice into radio signals. They will have a microphone and speaker, an antenna, an LCD display, function buttons, a battery and circuitry to make the conversion.

Most walkie talkies use a single frequency channel which means that you can only send and receive messages on the same channel. This is sometimes called half-duplex or a two-way radio.

If you are on a ski slope or trekking through the woods a good pair of walkie talkies will allow you to stay in contact with your friends and family so that you can make arrangements for meet ups or warn them of any potential problems. They are also a handy device to have in the car so that you can keep track of your children when they are outside playing and can even be used as a safety measure if you need to call for help.

Most walkie talkies use either NiCad, NiMH or Li-Ion batteries to power them up. These should be replaced every 12-18 months to ensure that they are working at their best. If they do run out of battery, a low-battery alert will be heard.
