The Baofeng UV-82 is a dual-band handheld radio aimed at amateur (ham) radio operators. This post covers what that means in practice, because the radio’s listing words, such as “walkie talkie” and “long range,” can make it sound like a general-purpose consumer radio. It is not.
What it is
The UV-82 is a VHF/UHF dual-band transceiver. Seller listings describe two frequency displays, dual standby (it can monitor two channels), 128 memory channels, CTCSS/DCS tone support and a built-in flashlight. Check the product page on our store for the details of the exact unit we stock.
One correction to a common listing phrase: CTCSS and DCS tones are not encryption. They are filters that keep your radio quiet unless it hears the matching tone. Anyone listening on the same frequency without a tone setting can still hear you.
Licensing: what applies
A radio like this is meant to be used with an FCC amateur radio license. Technician is the entry-level class; you pass an exam given by volunteer examiners, and the FCC application fee for a new license is $35. Technician-class operators can use the 2 meter (144–148 MHz) and 70 centimeter (420–450 MHz) bands, which are the ones most handheld activity happens on.
The UV-82 is not an FRS, GMRS or MURS radio. Those services require FCC-certified equipment, and the FCC will not certify a GMRS radio that can also operate on the amateur bands. Baofeng’s own manuals for this radio family state that these radios are not legal for use on FRS, GMRS or MURS. You can listen on those frequencies, but you cannot transmit on them with this radio.
Who it suits
- New or existing hams who want a low-cost handheld for local repeaters and simplex use.
- Hobbyists who like to program their own channel lists from a computer.
- Not people looking for a simple family or job-site radio that needs no license. See our FRS vs GMRS guide for options in that category.
Range, honestly
Listing claims of “1–10 km” describe open, unobstructed ground. A handheld radio with its stock antenna commonly covers one to a few miles in ordinary suburban or wooded terrain. Repeaters, higher ground and better antennas extend that. Treat the manufacturer figure as a best case and test your own route.
If you already hold an amateur license or are working toward one, the Baofeng UV-82 dual-band handheld is available in our store.
